How to track your child's football season (and why it's worth it).
If you're a grassroots football parent, you're already at every match. You watch from the touchline, you cheer, you drive home with the kit in the boot. The question isn't whether you'll experience the season — it's whether you'll remember it five years from now.
This is a practical guide to keeping a record of your kid's football season. Not a sentimental sales pitch — just what's worth writing down, what's worth a photo, and what you can safely forget.
Why bother tracking it at all?
Three reasons that tend to matter more than parents expect:
- Memory is unreliable. You will swear your kid scored twice against Wakefield, when actually they scored once against Wakefield and twice the next week against Bradford. A boxscore lasts; a brain doesn't.
- The arc shows up only in hindsight. Week 3 of the season your kid is too small for U10. Week 18 they're suddenly the one breaking the press. That growth is invisible week-to-week and obvious in retrospect — but only if you have something to look back on.
- The keepsake value is enormous. When a Year 11 hits you with "what was my first goal?", you want a real answer, not a vague one.
The interesting bit: you don't need to track much. Most parents who try to keep a journal over-record in week one and abandon it by week six. The trick is to write down the smallest set of things you'll actually finish.
What to write down (the minimum that's worth it)
For each match, capture:
- Date, opposition, score. 30 seconds. Non-negotiable — without this you can't reconstruct anything later.
- What position your kid played. Especially during seasons when they rotate. "Played left-back for the first half, swapped to midfield" matters more in retrospect than you'd think.
- Goals and assists (your kid's, not the team's). The team won 3-2 is one thing. Your kid scored one of those three is the part you want to remember.
- One sentence on something that happened. The goal-line clearance, the unfortunate header into their own net, the run from inside their own half. One sentence per match. That's the bit that ages best.
That's six fields. Five minutes after the final whistle. Honestly, that's the entire useful corpus.
What's optional but ages well
- One photo per match. Not a highlights reel — just one. The team huddle, the goal celebration, the muddy kit at half-time. Modern phones take excellent photos at 50m; this is easier than it used to be.
- Position-specific events. Goalkeeper saves, defender clearances, the number of times the midfielder took a corner. If you're going to track this, do it for a couple of seasons and then look back — patterns emerge that nobody could have predicted.
- Your child's mood after the match. Not for the kid. For you. Patterns in how Tuesday training compares to Saturday matches reveal a lot about what they actually love.
What to safely skip
Other parents will try to sell you on these. Resist.
- Heart-rate, GPS, sprint data. A 7-year-old isn't a Premier League player. Buying a £100 GPS vest to track their distance run is, charitably, premature.
- Possession percentages. Made-up at this age. You can't measure it without a fixed camera angle.
- Tactical analysis. Their coach decides shape. Your job is to be the dad on the touchline, not the assistant manager.
- Daily training log. Tuesdays are for being a kid, not for being an athlete with a recovery schedule.
Tools, honestly
The simplest tool is a Notes file on your phone. It works. The reason most parents stop using it is friction — searching for the file, remembering what fields you used last time, no way to look at the season as a whole. That's where a purpose-built app earns its keep.
